Pop Goes the Church

4 04 2008

I am currently reading “Pop Goes the Church” by Tim Stevens. The book just came out and Pastor gave each of the PMT a copy of the book. Pop Goes the Church asks the question “should the church engage in pop culture?”. And the book could not have come out at a better time, because people have left churches over this question

Here are my thoughts as I was reading the introduction:

When Jesus came into the world he did not speak God language ware God clothes that the people could not understand. He spoke their language in a way they understood. He presented the truth and packaged it in a way they understood. If Jesus came today and spoke the way He did then and presented the way He did then (which some Christians think we should and try to do), people would not understand Him. Because people do not receive like that anymore.

But some Christians expect us/the church to speak and do church the way is was relevant 2000 years ago. They say the music and the lights and the smoke machine are not how to do church. “It distracts people and its just entertainment”…In a way their right. When I go to pray and read I don’t turn on my fog machine and strobe light to worship God! Then again, its not about me…I already understand the gospel. We are speaking to a people who don’t understand and this is how to communicate.

Heres a quote from the book:

I think this is going to be a great book.

i think sharlene said something that clicks with this blog really well..

“These art forms are being used to impact the next generation…the next harvest.”

i think its awesome what our church is doing, and i think it shows – in the lives that are being brought to Christ.
